Program Overview: Girls Summer at Sea 2008

Immerse yourself in a new world this summer as you become part of the crew of an 82-foot sailing schooner. Raising sails alongside your shipmates, you will learn to pull harder and climb higher than you ever have before. Along the way, you will discover a new you.

Girls Summer at Sea offers teenage girls six weeks of rigorous classwork and true adventure. Students earn academic credit from SF State University and TSEA as they embark on a transformational personal voyage.

Dates: June 23-July 30, 2008
    June 23 to July 8: Land-based days, 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
    July 9 to July 23: At-sea days run 24 hours a day from July 9 to 27.
    July 24 to July 30: Community Service days at the Festival of Sail (weekend included)

Preparation: Two weeks of instruction in the classroom at SF State University and in the field at the SF Maritime National Historical Park.

Students work together to prepare both academically and personally for the upcoming voyage. In addition to designing oceanographic research projects, studying navigation and develop the communication and leadership skills that make the voyage a success. NOTE: Housing is not included for the Preparation or Culmination phases. Student must have housing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Voyage : Three weeks at sea along the California coast as crew of the 82-foot sailing schooner Seaward.

Standing watch around the clock, participants take responsibility for all aspects of the voyage, from navigation to sail handling. While at sea, students continue taking their academic classes, collecting oceanographic data, analyzing literature, and studying the arts of the sailor. The environment of a ship at sea safely challenges and inspires each participant, and our 3:1 student-teacher ratio ensures individualized guidance. Our graduates become valued shipmates and confident leaders.

Culmination : One week of community service.

Students return home and provide their time and talents to the SF Maritime Park in a week-long service project. Students form lasting relationships with mentors at the Park that share their passion for sailing and experiences at sea. They graduate with newfound skills to navigate their lives.

    Eligibility: Girls Summer at Sea is available to students who will enter their juniors or senior year the fall after completing Girls Summer at Sea. Recent high school graduates also may be eligible.

    Students must have housing in the San Francisco Bay Area for the Preparation and Culmination phases of the program. Housing is not included in the program.

    Applications: Students may still submit applications for the 2008 Girls Summer at Sea. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and an interview may be requested. Click here to go to the application page.

    Tuition

    TSEA is committed to making our programs affordable to all accepted students. We offer a sliding scale tuition based on need made possible by committed donors. Eligibility is determined by a financial aid application. Maximum tuition is $6,000.

    To determine eligibility for TSEA's sliding scale tuition program, you must complete a "Parents' Financial Statement" or PFS. This form is created by School & Student Services (SSS) but should be sent to the Tall Ship Education Academy as part of the application for admission to Girls Summer at Sea.
