Gabriela Bazan: I'm a sophomore at MetWest High School in
Oakland. I heard about Tall Ships last year in my freshman year.
There was a presentation at my school and I didn’t want to go. I
was so scared about all the responsibilities there were to drive
the ship and I was worried that I would do something wrong and
ruin the trip. As I heard more about the program later in the
year, I became motivated to go to see if I could take on the
responsibilities required. I am excited to try it and ready to
yell the commands we are suppose to say on the ship. |

Erin Carter: My parents named me Erin Damali to show the mix of my Irish and African heritage. I'm seventeen years old and have lived in San Francisco my whole life. I love reading all kinds of books and going on backpacking trips with my school. I also love to dance. I've taken tap, ballet, jazz, and hip hop classes since I was six. Until recently I was a senior at Gateway High School. I joined Tall Ship Semester for Girls to travel and learn new things. I've never been out of the country before and I've always wanted to travel. I expect that some of the things I'll have to do will be out of my comfort zone, but nonetheless I'm still excited for the trip ahead. |

Luci Carvalho: Before Tall Ships I was a junior at Gateway High School. I am originally form Brazil, but I've been living in San Francisco for the past five years with my family. I like to listen to music, go out with my friends, play tennis, and be around people I enjoy. I'm extremely excited to be part of this program because I think I can grow and learn a lot from it, and I know that by putting forth the most effort I can, I will get a lot of out it. |

Ke’xia
Draper: I am seventeen years young and I'm a junior at Discovery
Center School. I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. I am Creole (French and Black), Indian and European. I live with my mom and my younger sister. My main focus right now is going to college to major in
Nursing and minor in Music because I want to be a Nurse Practitioner when I grow up and I also love music. I'm not for sure where I might attend, but San Francisco State University is definitely one of my many choices to go to college. I want to participate in the TSSG program because I know this would help me grow as a person and to press on through challenges until it's over. I also know that TSSG would help me turn out to be a stronger strategic leader because I am currently president at my church's youth program.

Blanca Garcia: I am a junior at MetWest High School located in Oakland. I love to swim, learn about Chicano studies and cook. The reason why I chose to attend Tall Ships was because I also love to travel and I wanted to learn more about the ocean and how to sail a ship. |

My name is Roxanne Miranda Gemignani. My ethnic
background is multi cultural being Ecuadorian, El Salvadorian
and Italian. Last semester I attended Gateway High School as a
Junior and enjoyed my time there very much, but decided that I
wanted to try something new and different during my high school
career. This semester I have begun a whole new journey in my
life. I chose to be part of TSSG because I believe that it will
help to broaden my horizons and give me new options and ideas
about what I would like to do in life. I am excited about the
idea of working on team building and leadership roles as well as
our skills of working independently. I believe that these are
all important skills, which I will need for my later journeys
and decisions in life. Traveling has also become a passion of
mine after going to Ecuador to meet my relatives living there. I
enjoyed exploring their beautiful culture and cannot wait to
learn about more of our planets huge diversity. |

Elicha Green: I am a sophomore at MetWest High School in Oakland, California. I am currently enrolled in the TSSG at San Francisco State University. The program was introduced to me by my teacher because she had gone on the woman’s week trip. Nettie Kelly came to my school and made presentation for all the girls in the school. I decided to fill out the application because the idea of learning on a ship seemed to interest me. But at the same time it seemed like it would be hard to be somewhere with out my family and friends. Then I figured that I will just make new friends that would be like family. All the people that support my decision to join TSSG say that I’ll come away from this experience and look at the world in a different way. That’s why I chose this program to participate in. |

Ibukun Hambolu: I am an eighteen year old free spirited girl that loves the great out doors. Before joining Tall Ship I would bike ride everyday for at least an hour. I write poetry, letters to my overseas pen pals and am my own editor of an online newspaper. I spend most of my time reading and/or watching anime and playing video games and movies. I own all six
Bond games and my favorite actor is Keanu Reeves. My favorite subject is history and English.
I have an older brother, little sister and mom.
I am so glad I that I am a part of TSSG. I have this great opportunity to travel in front of me for the first time and I am going to take it. I hope that I will keep sailing long after the trip.

Janet
Leung: I am a junior at MetWest High School. I’m from the Bay
Area, lived in Oakland all my life. I’m really excited about
Tall Ship and I applied because it was something new and I
wanted a different experience. Some things I’m looking forward
to are meeting new people and living on a tall ship. When I come
out of this semester I hope for new friendships or stronger
friendships also to gain experience and independence. I hope to
learn a lot of new things also enjoying a once in a lifetime
chance. |

Wren Robb: I'm 17 and a senior at Gateway. I currently work at the Beacon Center at Everett Middle School. I found out about TSSG from people at my school who had gone and loved the experience. It sounded like a wonderful thing, but at first I hesitated because I didn’t know if it fit into my plans. After meeting all the girls who I will be on the trip with and the staff as well as finding out all the details to the program I know it's worth everything to have applied. Like most of the girls in the group I have basically no sailing experience which is why I'm am looking forward to this semester, to get to learn about sailing. I am looking forward to a change in the way we learn at school. Right now I am just real excited about the trip and happy that I didn't let my hesitation get in the way of this experience. |

Katie Shea: My name is Kaitlin Shea, but most people call me Katie. I was born and raised in San Francisco and I am currently a sophomore at Gateway High School. I first heard about TSSG at a school assembly when an alum of the program shared her experience with my school. I knew then that I had to do everything possible to make TSSG a reality for me. In addition to building my self confidence, I have already realized that many people believe in my ability to make this a meaningful experience. I hope to gain a better understanding of the cultures and the countries I will visit. I hope to walk away from the program with new meaningful relationships and a greater understanding of the world outside my own. |

Jessica Ramos: On the edge of San Francisco, just by Top of the
Hill, Daly City, I live with my ex-cousin-in-law and his 5 kids.
This is where I first told my cousin, Louis, about TSSG, this
amazing program I've been accepted to. As I've always wanted to
travel and have never had the chance, I anxiously await the
voyage. I hope this adventure will help me build strength and
confidence for later years in life. |
